Following the Continental surrender at Charleston in May 1780, the British army moved to pacify South Carolina by establishing garrisons throughout the countryside. One post was established at Hanging Rock, northwest of Camden. In two separate engagements, Patriot partisans engaged and defeated the British force at Hanging Rock. These victories helped maintain Patriot morale as the war moved deeper into South Carolina.
