Following his March to the Sea, Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's Army Group set out from Savannah in early February, 1865. Sherman set his sights on the Carolinas. The Confederates assembled an army under Gen. Joseph Johnston in an effort to slow Sherman's advance. On March 19, Johnston attacked Sherman near the village of Bentonville, North Carolina in what became the largest Civil War battle fought in the Old North State.
